In northern Vietnam, there are plenty of treasures undiscovered by mass tourism, such as tiny traditional villages and the forests of Cuc Phuong National Park. You can daydream on a traditional junk boat in spellbinding Halong Bay, trek through the wild vegetation of Cat Ba National Park, and explore hill tribe villages nestled amongst magical mountains. There are eight modules on this page, offering a range of fantastic experiences in North Vietnam. All of the trips begin in lively Hanoi, making it easy to combine the modules into a longer itinerary.

Anchors away in Halong Bay

The magical archipelago of Halong Bay lies off the north east coast of Vietnam. The region is composed of almost 3000 limestone islands that rise dramatically from the clear blue sea. During this popular module, you'll spend 2 days lazily drifting about the bay on a typical Huong Hai junk, staying overnight aboard the boat. Magical islands and hill hikes

Duration:	3 days / 2 nights

This module combines the 'dragon rocks' of Halong Bay with a visit to Cat Ba Island, a national park with dense jungly valleys and steep rocky peaks. You'll cruise through the bay past uninhabited islands, soaking up the sun and the scenery from your traditional junk boat. You'll then float leisurely towards Cat Ba Island, where you will spend two nights. Here, you'll take a hike through the tropical forest, relax on the beach, and take dips in the crystal waters. This module is ideal for more energetic travellers.

Hill tribes of Sapa

Duration:	5 days / 4 nights

In the far north of Vietnam, you'll find an untouched wilderness which is home to several fascinating hill tribes. Their villages nestle in a remote mountainous area with breathtaking views. Here, you can enjoy the peace of the hills, marvel at the stunning natural surroundings, and make friends with the locals. Prepare to be amazed by the colourful traditional markets and meet the people whose ancestors fled into the mountains from far-flung Asian countries. You'll take an overnight sleeper train from Hanoi up to the northern city of Sapa. Then, from Sapa, you'll set out on several excursions and short hikes. This module is only offered on an individual basis, allowing you to travel with true independence.

Sapa – train and hiking

This hilltribe experience is more physically demanding than the Hill tribes of Sapa module, so it's ideal for energetic travellers. You'll leave Hanoi and travel by overnight train into the far north of Vietnam. From here, you'll set out on amazing hiking trips to remote mountain villages of hill tribes. You'll spend a magical night with the villagers and another night in a comfortable hotel in the centre of Sapa. Then, you'll spend your final night travelling back to Hanoi on the sleeper train. This trip may be tiring, but it is worth every drop of energy.

Remote on the road

Duration:	6 days / 5 nights

There's nothing like the freedom of the open road. During this module, you'll travel in your own chauffeur-driven Toyota 4WD Landcruiser through magnificent countryside into the far north of Vietnam, past remote mountain villages and rice terraces. This is, without doubt, the best way to get to see the behind-the-scenes Vietnam of rural villages, buffalos, rice paddies, panoramic views, and hill tribes. You'll find yourself in wonderful places that tourism has not yet discovered, and you'll also visit the important centre of Sapa, where various hill tribes come to trade.

Hill tribes of Mai Chau

The hill tribes of Mai Chau live in small villages embedded within stunning mountainous countryside. Mai Chau is much closer to Hanoi than Sapa, so this is perfect hill tribe experience for travellers who are a little pushed for time. You'll spend one night in a traditional stilted house and you'll explore the lush green area surrounding Mai Chau on foot.

North Vietnam day trips

Bite Sized North Vietnam

Duration:	1 day per excursion
Price:	From £23 per person (based on 2 people sharing)
Departure:	Daily from Hanoi

Just beyond Hanoi, you'll find a peaceful land of rice paddies, rivers, canals, steep mountains and remote villages. You can get to know these areas with one, or perhaps several, of our day excursions. Spend a day rowing between the rice paddies, absorbing the culture and visiting pagodas. Trek through a tropical rainforest where giant trees and jungly vines tangle together. See rescued apes being nusred back to health. Visit a floating village hidden amongst rocky outcrops where the locals row boats with their feet. These modules will really help you to get a feel for laid back life outside the city limits.
