When To Travel To Vietnam
The climate in Vietnam can be divided into three different zones – North Vietnam, Central Vietnam, and South Vietnam. You can build your own Vietnam holiday featuring all three regions of Vietnam with our unique bite-sized Vietnam tours. Or alternatively, you can choose from our range of suggested holidays in Vietnam or give one of our friendly travel specialists a call on 01273 322 041.
The climate in North Vietnam humid and subtropical, while South Vietnam enjoys a tropical climate all year round. Central Vietnam lies somewhere in between. As Vietnam is a long, narrow country climate conditions vary considerably, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 35 degrees. It’s coolest in the mountains-sometimes even freezing in the winter. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the climate can be fairly hot and humid, so it can take a few days to acclimatise. During the Tet period (Lunar New Year), tourism in Vietnam reaches its peak. Tet usually falls in February, depending on the state of the moon.

When to travel to Vietnam: Rainy seasons
There’s a chance of rain at any time of year in Vietnam- so don’t forget your kag-in-a-bag! On the whole, it tends to rain for an hour or two towards the end of the afternoon, so you really shouldn’t let it put you off. Strictly speaking, your best chance of prolonged sunshine in all regions of Vietnam is from December to the end of April.
There are several monsoon periods in Vietnam’s climate, each specific to its region. The rains can be generally characterised as heavy afternoon showers which freshen the air. If you’re taking a Vietnam tour that includes outdoor activities, the local guides will try and adapt your programme to avoid these afternoon showers.
Most of our holidays in Vietnam run throughout the year regardless of weather. If you find yourself amid a tropical downpour, you can simply retreat to your bungalow or local bar and watch Mother Nature in action with a cocktail in hand.
When to travel to Vietnam: Beach weather
In Central and Southern Vietnam, there are several tropical islands as well as the quiet mainland beach at Mui Ne. Climate in Vietnam will obviously be of more importance to you during your stay on the beach, so it makes sense to plan your trip with the beach weather in mind. Here are some handy pointers:
Palm Island is best visited from the end of January to the end of September. You can expect heavy downpours in the months of October, November and December, although there are plenty of sunny intervals.
However, Phu Quoc Island and the mainland Vietnam beaches at Mui Ne have good beach weather in October, November and December. If you are planning to stay in these beach resorts during your Vietnam holiday, it’s best to avoid the months of July and August, when heavy rain is more likely.
In short, no matter what time you decide when to travel to Vietnam, you should be able to find sunshine at one of the beach destinations Vietnam has to offer. If you’re heading for the beach from January to September, Palm Island is the best bet. If you’re travelling from October to January, you’ll have more chance of sunny weather on Phu Quoc Island or Mui Ne beach.
